STEPS :

1. Shaping the legs

The legs are tapered as shown in the drawing, but it is best to mortise and drill the legs beforehand. Mark the tapers and the mortise joints on the sides of the legs. Cut out the mortises on the mortiser and clean the corners of the joints with a chisel. Drill the holes for the dowelling in the legs with the Forstner bit. Cut the tapers on the bandsaw and plane and shave them smooth as shown above.

2. Acorns, rails and stretchers

The upper part of the back legs forms the uprights of the seatback of the
chair. Use a sharp knife to whittle the acorn shapes on top of them. Leave them textured, or sand smooth. Prepare the seat roils and cut tenons on the ends (the joints are similar to the table tenons opposite) Cut lengths of dowelling for the stretchers.

3. Back slats

Use the grid on the drawing to plot the shape of the back slats. Cut out the shape on the bandsaw, as close to the outline as possible. The ends of the slats do not have tenons with shoulders, so they need to be on accurate, slightly wedged fit In the mortises. Assemble the chair without glue and check that the slats fit. Plane them with the spokeshave. Sand all components smooth.

4. Assembling

Check that all the joints close up correctly before gluing them together. Make sure you have set the clamps to the correct length and have protective blocks read. Glue and clamp the two side frames independently, check for squareness, and allow to dry. Join the two side frames with the remaining rails and stretchers, as shown above.

5. Making the corner blocks

Cut corner blocks on the compound mitre saw (set at 45°) and screw them to the frame – these reinforce the structure.

6. Completing the chair

Make the seat slab by gluing together lengths of wood in the same way as you did for the tabletop. Mark and cut the notches at the bock to accommodate the legs, and sand smooth. Fit the seat to the frame using four expansion plates. Sand for a second time and finish with varnish.
